Praying Jesus’ Way
Praying Jesus' Way keeps us from becoming prey to the world way.
We all know how easy it is to be captivated by and then captured in the www (worldwide web). The webis one of our adversary’s most effective tools in luring away his prey. For children of God, not living andpraying His way makes us prey to Satan’s way. Our adversary operates just like a spider.
The Spider has many different methods of capturing prey. The most common one that occurs
with the majority of species is creating a silky white and sticky web. As they chase their prey
into the direction of their webs, anything that touches it will be trapped. The prey can often run
much faster than the Spider. Yet, their feet quickly become entangled in the sticky mess of the
web. The trapped prey is then bitten by the spider and injected with venom, immobilizing him.
Being both crafty and tactical, spiders can also build webs in different directions in order to
capture prey that crawls or flies. Because of the oil on their limbs, they do not stick to their own
webs. And although spiders do not have great vision, they are able to use their senses in order
to create their intricate webs. A spider can also build more than one web so that it can increase
its chances of successfully getting enough to eat.
But not all Spiders use this method of being able to get their prey. The Wolf Spider is one
species that is very fast and mobile. As a result, it is able to chase down and capture its prey.
The Door Trap Spider has a very original tactic – he creates his web in a hole in the ground.
Then lines it with silk that covers it up so its prey cannot see it. When the prey happens by, it
falls into his trap and is unable to escape. The Grass Spider creates a type of funnel with the
silk webbing along the blades of grass. Its prey can get into the funnel but not out. The Garden
Spider is able to leave a dangling trap line and when it feels it vibrate, it quickly runs down to
capture its prey (similar to how fishermen use a pole with a baited hook at the end or an
enticing lure).
Now, why take time to talk about spiders? Like a spider, the god of this world has many worldly webs out there today – traps that can ensnare us and eventually immobilize us and make us prey to his ways. But God does not want us to ‘stay’ caught in any of his worldwide webs. We are all familiar with John 3:16. But notice what the next verse [17] says – Jesus came to set us free.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world
might be saved through Him.
Through Christ, God reaches out to us so that He may deliver us...not just from sin but also Satan’s webs – those traps that he lays in order to capture us. How do we, as Christ’s redeemed, prevent becoming prey again to our adversary’s ways? We live and pray Jesus’ way. Praying Jesus’ way keeps us connected to The One who has come to be our Deliverer. Staying connected also helps to keep us away from those worldwide webs. God has given to us this gift of prayer so that we may become and remain captivated by and captured in Him. The literal definition of the word ‘captured’ means – to be taken into possession or to be controlled by. Is this not what Christ has purposed for us while we are still here?
The next two Wednesday evenings, we will be taking a closer look at how to pray Jesus’ way. While we are presently in a study of the book of Psalms in order to be provoked to pray in a more Biblical way, I believe God wants us to first go directly to the Source on how to pray – Matt 6:1-15. In this passage, Jesus clearly reveals to us that in order for our lives to be right, our hearts must become right. So, this coming Wednesday we will take a look at ‘how to’ and ‘how not to’ pray [Mt 6:1-8]. And the following Wednesday, we will allow Jesus to reveal to us His process of prayer [Mt 6:9-15].
