A Final Frontier
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
I grew up a Star Trek fan. My older brother and I watched every episode…multiple times. I can
still hear those words in my mind – A Final Frontier. That’s how each Star Trek episode begins.
And this is how the apostle Paul ends his letter to the Philippians. For Paul, according to this
definition, it was a final frontier – the extreme limit of understanding or achievement in a
particular area.
As a Christ-appointed and Spirit-anointed shepherd, Paul made it his goal to “know” his flock. In
caring deeply for each of them, he did all that he could in order that they might experience in life
what he had learned to achieve – contentment. Throughout this beautiful letter, Paul conveys an
attitude of joy. Only someone who was and who had learned to remain joyful could proclaim to
others – Rejoice in The Lord always and again I will say rejoice! [Php 4:4]; and this, while he was in a
Roman prison. Perhaps it was The Lord’s will for him to write such a letter while he was
imprisoned, in order testify to each of us that true contentment really is a choice!
As Paul closes this letter, his most intimate of all the ones which he wrote, he wants to leave his
Philippian brothers and sisters with perhaps the most important understanding of all – we are
here on this earth to bless The Lord. How? We bless Him by seeking to glorify Him in all that we
say and do [1Cor 10:31]. This is the mindset we are to have and to maintain if we truly want to
experience a life of contentment. Isaiah tells us that The One who formed us in the womb is The
One who created us for His glory [Isa 43:7]. Almost 800 years later, Paul echoes this truth in his
letter to the believers in Colosse --
Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of The Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to
God The Father [Col 3:17].
What is it that brings God glory? Personally, it’s wanting to stay connected to Him. Jesus gave
His disciples an illustration of how HE was like a vine and they were like branches. A branch
must say connected to the vine in order to remain alive and fruitful.
I Am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart
from Me you can do nothing. [Jn 15:5]
Jesus is our power source. Staying connected to Him is vital to our life of contentment. Yet, Paul
also wants us to know that staying connected as the body of Christ is crucial to maintaining a
spirit of contentment in this divided world. Paul ends his letter to the Philippians with a gracious
greeting to and from all those who are in God’s family. One of my favorite Gospel songs is – I’m
So Glad I’m a Part of the Family of God. How glad are you to be a part of God’s family? Do you
see all who are in Christ as a part of that family? While there is much about heaven we do not
know, one thing we can be certain of -- there will be no factions, cliques or prejudices. No
division! All who have been invited will all be glad to be a part of the family of God.
Because Paul faithfully denied himself and was sacrificially willing to suffer at all costs, the
Gospel had advanced even as far as Caesar’s household [Php 4:22]. What Amazing Grace from
such a gracious God and King! There’s no limit to the power, beauty, and scope of God’s grace.
Have you learned the secret of contentment that His grace can bring? Are you connected to it?
Paul closes this beautiful book of joy and peace with the following words -- the grace of The Lord
Jesus Christ be with your spirit. This is who God said He would be for those who are His own --
Emmanuel, God With Us. Does your spirit have an extreme limit of understanding of God’s
presence? And has your spirit achieved an extreme limit of the presence of God’s grace? This
can and is to be – our Final Frontier here on earth…and in heaven.
