Pressing On…Toward the Goal! [Php 3:12-17]

Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may
lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. Brethren, I do not regard myself
as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to
what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different
attitude, God will reveal that also to you. However, let us keep living by that same standard to
which we have attained. Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk
according to the pattern you have in us.
I’ve been a sport’s nut most of my life. I’m thinking Paul must’ve been one, too. Throughout his letters,
he uses a number of sport’s analogies. In Php 3:12-16, he uses the example of an athlete running a
marathon and connects that to how we are to now live our lives in Christ. Like long distant runners, we
are to pace ourselves as we press on towards that finish line. We are to earnestly pursue perfection,
knowing that we will never reach it until we reach glory. Like a seasoned track coach, Paul challenges us
to lay aside what is in the past and to press on to what lies ahead.
In using his own life as an example, Paul personally testified that although he had not yet arrived, he
made it his goal (ambition) to press on toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus [:13-
14]. And so should we! We are to continuously be in God’s Word so that His Word and His thoughts can
continuously be in us. However, we must remember that there will be obstacles (hurdles) along the way.
In order to press on towards our goal, we must leave behind those past sins and failures that hinder our
progression. What good does dwelling on past sins and mistakes accomplish? Coach Paul says – none!
Instead, we are to dwell on Christ’s redemption (forgiveness) and restoration. Repenting of our sin (past
and present) qualifies us to wear God’s new labels – forgiven, son/ daughter, heirs, beloved, redeemed.
In verses 15 and 16, Coach Paul instructs the Philippian believers (and us) to encourage one another to
choose to adopt this same attitude. Don’t be hindered by the material treasures here on earth. Choose
to press on by looking towards those treasures awaiting you in heaven. And while you are running this
race, remember that you are a member of a relay team. So, when others fall back, allow The Spirit of
God enough room to work in their hearts so that HE may use you to raise them up to also press on.
One of the greatest ways to encourage others is by our example. Choosing to live according to Christ’s
standards each day influences others to also strive towards that finish line. This is what it means to be
Christ’s “witnesses”? We have been called by our God to testify that Jesus Christ is Lord. Do those
around you see Christ in you before they even here Christ from you? Can you confidently say (like Paul
in vs17) – Join in following my example?
So, let’s all get back on track! Let’s stay within the lines and keep Pressing On toward the goal that Christ
has set for us. Let’s run to win by exercising self-control as we discipline ourselves to say no to sin and
yes to making decisions that cause us to grow more and more into Christ’s image! Let’s run knowing that
we will receive that imperishable crown! And let’s not stop running until we get to that finish line! Let’s
choose to become more and more like Christ as we encourage our other teammates to do the same.
There’s lots of life left to live and training to be done and refining to take place. So, let us all press on
until that day comes when we, like Paul, can say -- I have fought the good fight, I have finished the
course, I have kept the faith… [2Tim 4:7]
